DDR Review conference opened in Juba on Monday November 15th, under the subtext of Lessons Learned and Challenges ahead of the Referendum. The two-day conference gathered together members of the diplomatic community, representatives from both North and South Sudan DDR Commissions, as well as UN and other stakeholders.

GTZ Congratulates its Graduates

On 4th November 2010, 704 trained ex-combatants and women associated with armed forces graduated from their GTZ training in Juba. They were the firs ones to receive DDR training certificates in Central Equatoria State.

DDR launching in Wau

 

25 October 2010 - His Excellency the Acting Governor of Western Bahr El Ghazal and the Chairperson of South Sudan DDR Commission officially opened the demobilisation site in Wau by jumping over a white bull as it was being slaughtered.

Wau Residents Hold Rally to Support DDR

23 October 2010 - Anticipating the launching of demobilization in Western Bahr El Ghazal, residents of Wau held a public rally. Hundreds of students, civil servants, honorary guests and other residents flocked to Izaac Stadium in Wau where groups of artists presented DDR-related edutainment.

Ex-combatants as Agents for Change - A new HIV/AIDS Peer Educator Initiative

After being demobilised from the SPLA, ex-combatants and Women Associated with Armed Forces returning to their communities are perceived by some as a risk to their areas of return, particularly when it comes to the spread of sexually transmitted infections such as HIV/AIDS. To fight this stigma, the DDR programme is training these men and women to become peer educators on HIV/AIDS prevention.

STUDY + HARD WORK= SUCCESS

The topic of todays class on the blackboard reads: "Subtraction" and the students diligently scribble down numbers and symbols in their exercise books.  Most are much older than you would expect a class of pupils learning simple mathematical equations to be.  But they are not exactly regular students – they are ex-combatants who have voluntarily handed in their weapons.

Pointing the Way to Successful Reintegration in Lakes State

For Priscilla Nyanyony, the disarmament, demobilization and reintegration (DDR) process is both personal and professional. Once a sergeant in the SPLA in charge of 34 men and women, she demobilized in Rumbek, Lakes State, in 2009 to begin a new life as a civilian.

Close to 40 local leaders from SPLA, local government and institutions and influential community members gathered to Torit, Eastern Equatoria on the 15th July 2010, for the first DDR Sensitization forum.
